Renovation and Upgrade of the “Yizkor” Hall

The “Yizkor” Hall, one of the central exhibitions of Beit Lochamei Haghetaot, was established around ten years ago as a part of a renewal of the central area of the museum. The artifact arrangements and the hall were designed by Bina Sela-Zur, Romy Achituv, and Meira Kowalsky.

Large drawers hidden within the walls of tinted glass store objects and artwork from the collections of the Ghetto Fighters' House archives. The drawers are located within the archives, but they face the display area, and the visitors are exposed to objects and drawings from the collection of art (graphic witness to the artists’ experiences during the Holocaust). Every object and document in the drawer display tells a personal story, while on the opposite wall stands an instillation with  floating letters of light that form the names of the destroyed Jewish communities. Together, in a single space, they reflect both personal and collective memory. Highlighting objects in the darkened space is done through electronic touch screens. Visitors touch lighted strips and choose on which items to focus. The process of unveiling these objects, "Realms of Memory" in the words of Pierre Nora, is through experience, the present task of remembering.

Over the years, the technology that the exhibition was based on had become outdated, and it was necessary to update the system. One of the criteria for choosing the company to implement the update was the preservation of the original museum experience for the visitor. The company “Camel Productions Ltd” was chosen to update the technology. The company has been developing multimedia displays for exhibitions and visitor centers for over twenty years. They specialize in creating advanced content and launching innovative technology. 

The new interface of the “Yizkor” exhibition is now simpler and user friendly. At the same time, we reexamined the objects displayed in the drawers (a small portion of the thousands of archived objects) and their location. The new guideline was thematic: to focus each drawer on a particular subject or theme, and accordingly select the items to be displayed. The project was led by the Archive Departments and put into operation through cooperation with the Museum Department and the Education Department.

The upgrade was made possible through donations from an anonymous fund and from the Librati family.
